is mac os x server or leopard a good replacement for windows server 2003?

i am planning to replace my windows server 2003 domain controller into a mac os x server. i was wondering if a mac os x server/leopard can do everything that a windows server 2003 can do? can you install windows applications remotely using mac os x server into your windows clients? can windows clients open or run a file hosted in a mac os x/leopard file server? which is better when it comes to security, reliability ana price? thank you so much in advance.

  1. Well when you get a mac server you might as well get macs its so much easier saved me hours of work.

  2. Sure, it can replace a Windows 2003 server. It supports both Mac and PC clients, etc. I am not sure about the installation of windows clients remotely, but windows clients can run files off of the server.

My guess is that prices would be similar (or possibly an edge to the Mac) when you look at TCO, total cost of ownership (supporting the machine, buying add-ons, security software, etc...)

Our 4+ year old Xserve has been running solid since we bought it.

Note that Leopard server is due out in a few months, so you can wait, or see if you can get a deal on the current Panther server.

If you haven't already done so, check out the links from Apple:
