Thermal cracked window???

The other day, I noticed that the glass in the lower sash of the window in our spare bedroom was cracked. The crack starts at the bottom and runs about half way up. We know that nothing hit into the window and it happened just within the last few days as we would have noticed it before. We moved into this home this past October. It has electric baseboard heat and all of the units are located under the windows. My wife was staying in the spare bedroom recently as she was sick and her coughing was keeping me up at night. She had the chills, so she kept the heat in that room quite high...like 75 degrees! My question is if it is possible that, on a cold night and with the heat on relatively high...that could cause a thermal crackin the window glass. These are replacement windows and have two panes of glass...inner and outer with the decerative grids sandwiched in between. The house is a stick built modular that was built in like 1982. The windows are vinyl and I don't know if they are original or replacements. I don't have the phone number of the prior owner, but I may be able to look him up to ask.

  1. quite possible the heat hitting the cold window from outside cracked the window .do you know if you have warrentees on the windows.find out because if you do you can have it replaced i would call the manufacture up on the phone anyway explane to him what happend maybe they will replace it for free things like that just don't happen it must of been a defective window in the first place.good luck and call.

  2. not very likely.there had to be a defect in the window.call the installer or manufacture.thermo windows are designed to tolerate changes in temp,s.don't know Howe old they are ,and that could be a factor to consider

  3. We have thermal windows throughout the home, and heat/ac vents below them.

We have never had this problem.

There is probably a defect in the window. A higher end brand will usually have a 10+yr warranty, but being that you just bought the house and the previous owners put them in, this might be hard to do figuring out how old they are. Try though.

You can always just replace that window. They are very easy to replace. It just looks intimating to do. We did all of ours.

One window will only take about 1 hour to do for the 1st time doing it, and once you know how to do it, you can install windows within 30mins!

    :-)

  4. It is known as a stress crack and is not that uncommon. Usually the result of a foreign substance that got between the glass and the sash frame during manufacture, a hard chunk of stuff that created stress on the glass.

Hopefully, the glass will be covered by a warranty and you can get it replaced with little cost. Contact the retailer where windows were purchased.
