Any recommendations on large window replacements?

I have a 10 ft wide picture window that needs some serious replacement. The way it is set up now is a 6ft window that doesn't open in the middle with a 2ft window on either side which do. Don't know if this is standard, the thing is huge. Just wondering what to expect (price wise) and what companies you would or would NOT recommend.

  1. This was standard picture window style from the 50s on, especially on smaller houses that needed the large window to give the illusion of space.

Pella makes a good window, but whomever you use, ensure that the installer knows what they're doing. I was just at a $20 million house on the beach that had considerable water damage from new windows installed improperly.

  2. I would recommend that you do some leg work on this one. Call around get lots of estimates and also check out LOwes or HomeDepot for estimate and insulation costs. Depending on your area you can also call or visit the website for the BBB- better business bureau for advice on good companies in your area. Good Luck.** I know if you use Lowes Or Home Depot you'll get a warranty on all insulation, and on the window. Anyone company you use make sure they have a warranty to protect you. And make sure they are Licensed Contractors also.

  3. Another thing you might consider is retro-fit window. It is a window that replaces yours without taking out the old window frame. I know it dosent sound all that great, but the finished result is great. The window may be a little more to get installed but in the end you save money because the window person is the only person coming out to your house.
