Does anybody know how to get a replacement spindle for a dvd-rom drive?

The spindle (or whatever the heck it's called...the small round part that the disc clicks onto in the center of the drive) on my computer's dvd-rom drive is conspicuously missing since the other person living with me has been using it pretty heavily. My machine is a Gateway 7510GX laptop if that helps. My biggest problem is now I have no way of installing CD or DVD based software on my machine and I need to be able to reinstall Windows XP in an emergency. HELP! Does anybody know how to get a replacement for the missing part or do I have to replace the entire drive?

  1. Go to an independent repair shop and show them what you need. They may have one off an old drive.

  2. For the cost of a drive now, buy a new one. To dismantle it, replace the part and re-align the drive will cost a fortune.

  3. For the cost of replacing parts, you'd be better off replacing the entire drive. A DVD burner can be had for less than $40 at places like newegg.com and Best Buy. The actual replacement of the drive is simple and you could most likely do yourself.
