Does anybody know how to get a replacement spindle for a dvd-rom drive?

The spindle (or whatever the heck it's called...the small round part that the disc clicks onto in the center of the drive) on my computer's dvd-rom drive is conspicuously missing since the other person living with me has been using it pretty heavily. My machine is a Gateway 7510GX laptop if that helps. My biggest problem is now I have no way of installing CD or DVD based software on my machine and I need to be able to reinstall Windows XP in an emergency. HELP! Does anybody know how to get a replacement for the missing part or do I have to replace the entire drive?

Go to an independent repair shop and show them what you need. They may have one off an old drive.

For the cost of a drive now, buy a new one. To dismantle it, replace the part and re-align the drive will cost a fortune.

For the cost of replacing parts, you'd be better off replacing the entire drive. A DVD burner can be had for less than $40 at places like newegg.com and Best Buy. The actual replacement of the drive is simple and you could most likely do yourself.
