Windows XP problem?

IBM Think Pad Windows XP when turning on the laptop the first screen shows the logo for IBM thinkpad windows xp then reverts to a black screen w/the following info: we apologize for the inconvenience, but Windows did not start successfully....etc the options to choose from are: safe mode, safe mode w/networking, safe mode w/command prompt, last known good configuration, start windows normally If you select any of the above it does not help a blue screen also comes up w/ "unmountable_boot_volume" if you select nothing I have a PC Med-Kit disk that I was told should fix the problem but to no avail I need to try and retrieve applications/items from the hard drive so I can move them to the replacement laptop. The disk that I have will not boot up, it's like the computer doesn't recognize it

  1. You need to take out your laptops hard drive and put it in a enclosure in order for you to retrieve your applications and files. After that, you will need to wipe your hard drive and install a fresh copy of Windows XP

  2. 1.Insert the Windows XP CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive, and then restart the computer.

Click to select any options that are required to start the computer from the CD-ROM drive if you are prompted.

2.When the "Welcome to Setup" screen appears, press R to start the Recovery Console.

3.If you have a dual-boot or multiple-boot computer, select the installation that you must access from the Recovery Console.

4.When you are prompted, type the Administrator password. If the administrator password is blank, just press ENTER.

5.At the command prompt, type chkdsk /r , and then press ENTER.

6.At the command prompt, type exit , and then press ENTER to restart your computer.

This takes a bit longer, but the system should boot back into Windows.

  3. Put the laptop drive in an enclosure box or use an adapter to hook it up to your desktop. Then run chkdsk on the drive and save all your files to your desktop. If chkdsk picks up bad sectores then replace the drive. If it doesnt and fixes some errors, put it back in the laptop and try to see if it works now.

  4. Could be a problem with device drivers, hardware or software. This problem can be solved by uninstalling new softwares, updating device drivers and making minor configuration changes .
