Glass replacement for tenant?

I have dual pane windows in my apartment. I came back home and the outside glass of one of the windows is broken. However, the glass is so thick that only the "outside" glass is broken. I didn't tell my landlord yet. Do I have to pay for the replacement? How much does it cost? I don't know how the window got broken. I came home one day and it was broken. It doesn't make my place colder though since the inside glass is so thick.

  1. It depends on your lease, but I think the landlord should have to fix that on his dime.

  2. if you didnt break it, it's the landlord's responsibility to fix. i work for an insurance company & usually [unless says otherwise in lease] they are responsible for damage to the property unless caused by you.

  3. Do you have any idea how it got broken? I wouldn't think you were responsible. It sounds like someone threw a rock at your window.

Do you have to tell your landlord? Does it make your place colder?

If it's a special kind of glass it could run up a little bill, but generally replacing a window pane will run you a few dollars, depending on where you live.

I asked you a question only to clarify what you were saying. I didn't intend to answer a question with other questions. I have a feeling someone is going to report me. So, good luck with getting this repair taken care of.

  4. You didn't break it, so it isn't your responsibility.

  5. If you didn't cause it, you don't owe for it. It's no different than if a tree fell on your roof or a vandal spray painted the out side walls. You didn't do it.

If it was the inside pane, it would be a different story.
