- REALLY NEED MORE INFORMATION BUT USUALLY EASIER TO INSTALL RE-PLACEMENT WINDOWS.IF HOME IS CIRCA 1920 YOU HAVE WOOD SASH.REMOVE WINDOW STOP THE LITTLE PIECES OF WOOD THAT SEPERATE THE WINDOWS FROM EACH OTHER.THEY USUALL BREAK BUT WILL NOT BE NEEDEDTO FINISH INSTALLATION PRY OUT FROM THE BOTTOM FIRST WORK YOUR WAY UP THE WINDOW A LITTLE AT A TIME AFTER REMOVAL TAKE OUT INNER SASH PEREAT FOR OUTER SASH,SLIDE PROPER WINDOW IN ANCHOR DONE NO TRIM NO PAINT IT'S BEER THIRTY
- Alot of the wood window manufacturers have sizes made to replace those older styles with relative ease. If you want to use the aluminum type it will usually entail more work. You want to be careful removing the old ones- they may have lead paint- wear a mask for the dust because the paint will be in multiple layers and can't tell if it is lead or not and the dust will have accumulated over the years
- Our 1890 house had the old long windows in bad repair including window sills inside and out. Business that sells windows should have (one we went to did) how you can order specific size you want - - this route better make sure from what point to what point that manufacturer uses to measure. If you gave wrong measurements, windows won't fit. Special orders are spendier than newer windows.
If put in new styled windows, will have to enclose 'leftover' opening which could cost about same as a special order.
BUT, now you have to match outside of house; siding, etc...
We were going to do new siding so went with new styled windows and enclosed extra space prior to siding. Since we didn't need exact measurements on windows, we purchased cheaply by getting new unclaimed windows at this window business (people ordered & changed mind, didn't pay, or ordered wrong and the business was happy to get these windows out of their warehouse storeage at discounted price).
