Can I put a replacement window into my old frame from the outside of the house?

Can I install a vinyl replacement window into my old frame from the outside of the house rather than from the inside. I do not want to disturb the window trim on the inside of the house.

  1. That's going to be pretty tough... as soon as you pull the old frame out, it's going to disturb the interior trim as well, and not neatly. It's better to remove the interior and exterior trim first so you won't run the risk of it being damaged. Then install the new window from the outside, shim and level it properly, nail it into place and tack the old trim back in place inside. If the exterior trim can be reused so much the better. Don't forget to caulk before putting the trim back too.

  2. We had replacement windows installed last year and they did it from outside after removing the old sashes. then they had to put flashing around outside to make it look good

  3. Windows are usually installed from the outside.

They have a flange that is nailed or screwed to the exterior sheathing of the house.

You did not say what material the siding is, but if it is wood, cut the siding 2" away from existing window thru to sheathing, and remove existing window.

You will have to trim around the replacement window w/ 1"x4"s, or a similar trim.

  4. Not really enough info. What style of exsisting window are you replacing? You say "old frame", do you mean rough opening, or are you removing sashes from a jamb and installing new unit in exsisting jamb? I`m assuming this a wood house.

  5. Windows can be installed from the outside of the house, infact most professionals do it this way. The interior of the house is not disturbed, no repainting, rewallpapering of walls. It is a beautiful thing.

  6. You can order Marvin windows built to fit your existing openings.

  11. All replacement window compamies do their work from outside the house. The window goes into the existing frame and then is sealed from the outside. The old sash is the only thing that is removed. The one drawback is the new visible glass. You will have a smaller glass opening because the new window has it's own frame is slightly smaller than the old window frame. This makes the new glass smaller. Most Home depot stores sell replacement windows and have a DVD to watch at home about how to do it. Good luck.
