windows XP operating system is not recognising my new hard drive?

recent my samsung spinpoint 80gb laptop top died in my compag presiaro c310 and i bought a replacement few days ago but my windows XP cd says there is no had drive connected so i can not install windows XP it doesnt have a name but it says: WD1600B EVS - 22UTD LBA 31258180 thank you for any suggestions on how to fix my problem but laptop hard drives dont have jumpers do they. its a serial ATA

  1. check jumper settings on hard drive, should be cs or master

  2. When replacing a HDD, you have to ensure that the HDD is on the master jumper. Also ensure that the HDD is connected properly to the cable (sometimes there are bad cables, so that might have to be replaced). After this is done, you will have to go into the bois and make sure that the HDD is recognised by the bios. XP gets most of the hardware info from the bios and if the HDD is not recognised by the bios, XP will not see it.
