System files replaced by Virus!?

Like the title says, A Virus/Trojan overwrited my system files. I reinstalled Windows and now I want to know how can I restrict the replacement of system files? I know I could use a limited account but I wont be able to install software. Can anyone tell me how to restrict replacing system files (or FREE)

  3. Hi!

There is a very simple solution, free too. Simply install all the software you need. Then, go to Start> Control Panel> User Accounts. Create an account with a name different than Guest. In Account Type select Limited. Create a password for the account. Now log off from the current user into the new account. You have limited privileges.

In order to improve the use of your account consider this:

    - at first let this new account have administrative privileges (when you create it chose the other option, not the Limited....)

    - modify your settings, such as Theme, Desktop, Start Menu, etc

    - create a password for the old account, this way, if you temporarily need administrative privileges you can click on any executable files and chose Run As... where an username and password are required, that's right, the other (old account log in data).

    - after all this is done, simply chose back the Limited account settings for the new account.

You might also want to consider that, while installing Windows XP you were asked for an Administrator password. Did you fill the password in (you didn't let it empty, did you?). If the administrator password is empty I strongly recommend you reinstall Windows and fill in the password. Use a strong password, too.

    Good luck!

P.S. By default, installing software for limited accounts is disabled. Also, installing malware is very difficult. I saw this on a guy's computer working for Microsoft.

  4. the most safe way is to have anti virus and anti spyware installed and they will prevent these things from happening. you can get anti spyware at http://www.2-spyware.com/compare.php
