How to install a replacement window on a stucco wall?

Public Comments

  1. Replacement is a fairly broad term for replacing windows. Depending upon the amount of work you're willing to do and the types of old and new windows, replacement can be very easy or extensive.

If your old window is wood and the frame is sound (no evident dry rot or termite damage), you could "block" a replacement into the old window frame and nail stops around it to hold it in place. Then there's the true retrofit vinyl types that have covers to conceal fastening points on old frames. These are special order and generally look pretty good when done. The OTHER, less desirable method would be to cut back the stucco to expose the old frame for complete removal and replacement. This is invasive and hard to conceal unless you hire a good stucco guy to match the original stucco pattern AND possibly the color. The latter of the two is virtually impossible to do do perfectly if dealing with the original color coat. Most just opt to have the wall/house painted where the window(s) were replaced.

So again, the amount of work will all depend on what you currently have and what you intend to buy.

  2. Why is the window being replaced? Is it wood, aluminum, iron, vinyl? I can help more with more information.
