Window Replacement Which brand and When?
I Am planning to replace old windows with new energy star ones. Which brand is more relible Pella or Anderson and when is the cheapest time to do them. Any suggestions would be great, I live in Brooklyn NY.

- If I may suggest, look into Gorell Windows & Doors. They are the 5-time Energy Star Partner of the Year and 3 years Sustained Excellence Award winner, and the only window manufacturer ever to get the Sustained Excellence award at all.
They are better than Pella and Anderson, if you ask me, and cheaper. It's worth a look.
- :Pella is the best brand to use and price is comparable to Anderson. With Anderson being a bit cheaper. But Pella is by far much better. Right now would probably be the best time to buy and install them. With the economy at an all time low, and building of homes in a slump, you may be able to work out a great deal with the distributor, cause they are going to want to make any sale they can. Not only real estate is a buyers market but materials and contractors are looking to remodeling as the area to keep them going during this econimcal slump. I am in construction my self in Tennessee and if I were close, I would bid on the job myself!
- Having installed thousands of windows over the last thirty years,I would have to tell you that its about a good installation and not about price.A Pella or a Anderson is a decent window, but you can buy many other brands that work just as good for alot less money.
- My only opinion on this subject is that i once bought Anderson windows from Home Depot and they were junk. Then my neighbor bought Anderson windows right from an Anderson window shop and they were first class.
- I agree that installation is the key in your windows. You should personally look at window samples to decide if you like the looks and qualities of it. There are many types at many grades. A good installer can make a moderate or even low grade window a great improvement over standard wood windows. A bad installer can make the best grade window a disaster! Make sure they are caulked on the outside where vinyl meets wood and insulation in all gaps. Keep in mind that insulation can not be forced into gaps for it will bow the frame of the window and hender its performance. If your installer rips the stop on the outside to replace your windows, the stop sometimes leaves a void between framing of house and outside molding. That will need to be filled with insulation. That is a common miss. If you get alot of sun i suggest triple pane for one simple reason. Good triple pane windows will have DOUBLE low e glass, thus stopping the suns penetration even better than double hungs. As far as "cold" goes, triple or double is good. Double pane glass stacked together is as thick as triple pane. Its the double low e of triple pane that benefits, especially in a sunrroom! I could type forever on this but i hope this helped.
