best replacement windows... is it ok to buy from hardware store?

I am getting the windows replaced in my home by a family friend. We are buying the windows on our own. Are the windows that you can buy at home depot ok? What should I be looking for? Any recommendations would be great. Just in case it matters, I live in Wisconsin.

  1. You can get them from HD, but they have a somewhat limited selection as far as sizes, styles, etc. What part of Wisconsin? We have several window distributors in Madison. VerHalen carries the full line of Pella, Window Design Center carries Marvin, among other brands. There's a place in Oconomowoc that carries Hurd. E-mail me if I can help.

  2. We are replacing our windows as well this fall. The ones from Home Depot seem fine, but there isn't a whole lot of selection unless you custom order.

You can custom order ones that have argon between the glass panes (which is supposed to help with efficiency) as well as having wood trim. They do cost more though. We are putting off getting the last 3 because of the additional cost, but it will still be much less than hiring someone. Our next door neighbor with the same style home got quoted $10,000 (and had heard the guy was the least expensive in town) and we are going to be able to replace them all with top of the line windows for only a couple of thousand.

  3. Hi,

Why not get your friend to either run a few biz cards off the computer or try vistaprint.com to get free cards.

Why? well I would then go to a place where the traders and contractors go and place an order, this way your will not only get them at trade but in most cases you will get them custom made with a quicker turn around.

    any good?
