Window Putty or Caulk?

Window Putty or Caulk? I am taking out the old window putty and painting old windows. Should I replace the putty with caulk or window putty? Also, these are single pane old window glass. Do they make replacement custom double paned windows or something similar? Thnx Tloc, they are panes that are to be replaced, not the whole windows.

  1. I would recommend caulking its easier to use completely water tight last longer and looks better when you smooth it. As for the replacements as long as they are not odd sized windows you should be able to find new windows with the tracks that will fit right inside the old frame. If they are odd sized you will have to custom order them.

  2. I would use window putty, it is designed for that purpose.

Most window sash that are made for single glazed are not thick enough to accommodate insulated glass. Can purchase replacement sash to fit in current frames. These are pricey, but probably the best available and fairly easy to install. Certainly less expensive than getting entire new windows.
