I locked myself out of my apartment one day and the doors were locked with my keys inside and me outside, so the only option I had was to break the double paned glass window in the center of my back door. I now need to fix it badly, there is a lot of cold air coming in, & I've read that DIY replacement of windows is the cheapest way (versus hiring someone to fix it). I have no clue where to start, and have never done this before so I was looking for some guidance in getting started on the repair. The door is a metal door with an approximate 3' x 2' window in the center- the window runs from the door knob to near the top of the door and centered across this length. There are wood trimmings along the edges of the window hole that are nailed in somewhere? What would be: - the most cost-efficient way to repair/replace this type of door/window, what all would I need (supply wise), and how do I get started/completing this? Or: Would it be cheaper to find another steel door (possibly through an auction or discount supply) similar/same to the one I have now, and just using that to replace the whole door? Also, any help on locations (on the web) or locally that I can go to find the supplies that I am looking for- (ae: the particular window that I will need, or a used/new door that is similar or the same as mine). I live outside of Pittsburgh, Pa. Any help would be appreciated.
Take out screws and remove window.
Take broken window down to your local hardware store or glass company and have them replace the broken frame with new glass.
