Can I transfer an OS from one HD to another?

I have a broken hard drive and I was planning on replacing it, but then I wouldn't have windows. Is it possible to copy windows from another hard drive that has it pre-installed onto the replacement hard drive? Basically, I want to use a copy of windows on one computer as recovery disks for another. When I asked microsoft this they said it would violate the terms but, didn't mention if there was something that would actually stop me, is there?, and I paid for both copies so I wouldn't be violating anything Is there any other alternatives to buying recovery disks, can I download the information and make my own CD's. It will be cheaper to buy a new HD and recovery disk than to buy another computer so no comments like that are necessary.

  1. If the copy can proceed there's no stopping you besides MBR which means you have to essentially surgically transplant the old install to a newly pristine install.
