Rear glass window on my GMC Envoy blew up and shattered in my husbands hands!?

My husband was opening the rear hatch window on our 2004 GMC Envoy and the window just shattered. It basically blew up if you can understand that. Pieces of the window went everywhere. Pieces were even found in my husbands pocket of his pants somehow!!! Does anyone know what may have caused this? I at first thought maybe it was the cold, but it is not that bad out here. It is cold but 13 degrees or maybe a little less, but no below zeros or anything. Does anyone know where I can find replacement window online for cheap? I have searched but haven't come up with many options. Any help would be great!

  1. Windows are heavy, very difficult to ship. Any savings would be negated by having to crate and ship the window. Go to any automotive glass place and they will get and install the window for you. My wild guess is it will be $200 or so.

  2. How old is this envoy? i would be contacting GMC or a dealership if it is under 36000 miles

  3. What caused this window to shatter was not the cold temp, but rather a simple problem. The rear hatch windows are strong when mounted correct, but when the smallest amount of pressure is applied to the glass from any metal parts they will shatter. When mounting a new hatch, is is soooo important that the bushings used in the mounting holes are in good shape, and aligned correctly. With out this, the smallest amount of pressure can cause them to pop.

  4. jhperf1 is right - any tension on safety glass will make it shatter. It did exactly what it was designed to do.

Go to your dealer or a glass installer to replace the window, but solve the problem as well - something was out of alignment or missing to cause the glass to shatter.
