Hard drive replacement problems.?

I have an oldish dell desktop that i have been using for a long time, and i wore out the hard drive, so i bought a new one. now when i tried to replace it, all i heard was a beeping nnoise that i belive that came from the cpu, and nothing came on the screen of the monitor. I do not know how old the new hard drive is (ebay) I have all cables plugged in and in the right spots. i belive i have tried every possible combination of cable arrangement possible (power and ribbon) The computer wont boot from the windows instalation disk note to reader: my speaker isnt plugged in so it cant be it beeping also i put my ear up to the cpu and it was loudest there, no idea why. Also the beeps dont stop. And most importantly I CAN'TGET TO THE BIOS! MY COMPUTER ISNT BOOTING! I cant look up what the beeping means because i just remembered that about 2 years ago i replaced the motherboard with a custimised gaming one and i dont knowwhat model or even brand it was.

  1. It came from your front panel speaker, not the CPU.

How many beeps was it? You could have a misaligned or broken CPU, an improperly seated RAM card, or loose video card. You need to press those things in TIGHT, or else they can't be read by the motherboard.

  2. It's possible the "new" hard drive might be more deteriorated than your old one. If you have the knowledge to install one I guess you have the correct hard drive for your particular make/model of computer. There are a few people who do not realize there are different types of hard drive

  3. Are you booting to the new HD? If so you need to install the OS (Windows). Put the Dell OS disk into your CD or DVD and hit F12 (repeatedly) when you boot up to get to a one-time boot menu. Select the drive your OS disk is in and install Windows.

Oops, just saw that you can't get to the boot disk. Try to hit F2 and change the boot sequence to where the CD drive is first but remember to change it back. Also, do you have two CD/DVD drives? I've had to switch them to boot to a DVD in the master drive. It won't let you boot to a slave drive sometimes.

Or your new HD may be no good.

  4. you can look up the beep code from the manufacture and that will give you a better idea of whats wrong .. from there ..if the hard drive if bad.. go to the manufacture of the harddrive and see if it still under warranty.. most have 1 yr up to 3-5 years depending on the maker and type of drive..and it may be possible to RMA it .. if it was a pull from a HP/compaq/IBM etc.. then you cant do anything about .. and if you can return it to the seller on Ebay then i would go that route.

also have someone with alittle more experience if you can look at it and double check your setup.

  5. first answer is correct. You more than likely bumped the memory or video card while installing the drive.Open it back up an re-seat memory, all cards, cables and wires. My bet is the memory. You can clean the contacts of the ram with a clean pencil eraser.

  6. you have to go to the bios setting. the bios must recognize the hard drive before it will work. or check the hdd jumper and make sure that it is on the correct slot. Try first the cable select then try boot if not go the master then have the bios recognized it.

    hope that helps

  7. beeping could be the memory is not completely in the slot.make sure no other devices are connected to the computer.connect only the mouse, keyboard, and of course---the monitor.reset the bios to default settings---then set the computer to boot from CD..or in the first screen press f11 to boot from CD

  8. CPU's dont beep, the case speaker does.

unless you change the boot priority to CD you can run every cable configuration in the world and the system wont boot from the CD.

did you set the new drive jumper correctly?

    EDIT

either your CPU is dead or the mother board is...
