why do people who try free operating systems like linux ubuntu switch back to windows?

I recently tried Ubuntu and it seems to work great as a windows replacement. I would like to hear from people who don't like it and why.

  1. Because they're silly and should just get a Mac :)

  2. I tried Ubuntu but I'm just more comfortable with Windows. If I had a lot of time to play with it and get used to it then I might have made the switch.

  3. Because only idiots use Linux.

Are you going to go out and buy a Geo as well because its cheap and economical?

  4. Well, for one thing almost no games run in Linux. I run Linux through a virtual machine when I need it but 95% of all the software I need/use is for Windows.

  5. Because its either harder to use or not as fast or good features and functions as windows

  6. Microsoft Word doesn't run on Ubuntu.

(I didn't do Ubuntu. I did both Red Hat and the Linux where everything starts with the letter K.)

  7. I agree with you but Windows wins because the vast majority of software, games and hardware only work with Windows and not Ubuntu. (or any other linux distro)

  8. I tried it just as an experiment, and I wasn't really impressed. It worked perfectly fine, but there was nothing about it that would make me ditch Windows. People tell me Vista is garbage, but I've been using it for over a year and I have very few complaints about it. Also, I do a lot of computer gaming, and the games don't work on Ubuntu, so that's another main reason.

  9. its a bit of a hassle for the average computer user everyone love free stuff, but once they realize that there is no one on the other end of the phone explaining patiently how to install stuff, then they return to windows.

  10. Because of compatability.

Microsoft may have the least stable operating system, but it has the most developed freeware/software community around. i only use Linux for coding.

  11. im using ubuntu as i type and i dont like it because you cant download anything directly from the internet

  12. A lot of people are more comfortable with Windows because they have been using it for a long time, so it's what they are more familiar with, and they find that it's generally easier to use. There was a point in time I too switched to Linux, only to find myself later switching back to Windows because Linux doesn't feel the same.

I think this quote explains it all. There will always be something blocking you in Linux if you've used Windows for most of your life. If your friends, work, whatever use Windows you will most likely switch back to Windows because that's what makes you productive the most.

I personally love UNIX, but I can only use Mac or Windows for a desktop. But I use SSH to read my email, chat, program, etc. However my time is valuable and people send me Excel sheets and all sorts of crap. I have no place in telling them to switch to make my life easier. I just have to get stuff done. Windows (or Mac) makes this much easier than Ubuntu. I don't have to download specific software, configure programs, etc. to get stuff done. Infact to be truthful, I don't want to deal with word processors, spreadsheets, outlook, etc. at all. However the nature of my work (and possibly anyone who has a desk job) requires this.

  14. Linux is a much more efficient operating system for computers. Windows is a memory hog, especially Vista, and Linux is very good at getting rid of your temp files after you close a program, unlike Windows.

Linux requires a base knowledge to use it. A lot of it's functions are command line driven and the learning curve for it is much wider than windows and mac.

I personally run both. I created 2 partitions and run Linux for various functions such as my music recording, internet, and database processing. Windows is good because its software pool is 100x that of Linux and about 95x that of Mac. However, as with Macs, pretty much every program you commonly use on Windows has a Linux alternative.

  15. I tried with Fedora 6 or 7 and recently with Ubuntu. (sp)

The problem for me is that I love video games. Ubuntu and Linux and Mac don't realize the amount of us PC users that love our games.

The developers don't realize that there is a whole market to be tapped into. If only they could run Fallout 3 or Oblivion without going thru a 900 million step process. And yes I know about WINE.

And Blender? Wow, how hard is that. I use Maya now and 3ds max. I paid for them, Far easier than the silly tutourials.

But I do believe that linux is awesome, no spy ware, malware.

But I can't do my games on it.
