Are replacement windows always this expensive?
My house has old inefficient aluminum windows and I'm thinking about getting them replaced. I had a salesman from Champion Windows come out because they have this "40% off" sale going (yeah right! lol) He said it would be around $600 per window AFTER the 40% discount... $1000 per window before the discount! Is this what I can expect from other companies? If it's going to be that expensive we'll just buy windows from Lowes and install them ourselves.

- Get an estimate from a liscensed contractor for replacement vinyl windows. I had mine installed for about $260 per window.
Many of these Champion type window companies are a scam - sounds like you found one. Report to the better business bureau.
- The cheapest 3'0 x 5'0 window (doublepane) is around $139. If you're getting a decent (better)window, installed, $600 sounds like the list price BEFORE a discount. Call a general contractor and get an estimate. I wouldn't trust a 'replacement window' company. They are usually 'blow and go' hacks that gouge a thousand customers a year and eat the cost of the occaisional lawsuit as a cost of doing business.
Get more estimates.
- it could. if the window opening needs to be reframed to fit the new window. ask for the price of the window then ask what do you charge per hour for labor. it's ok to get several estimates. Also I don't recomend you installing your new windows your self. If you don't do it right they will leak water and cause more problems.
- Not impossible. How big are your windows? I assume you`re upgrading. If you`re looking at an upper end unit this price is probably right in the ballpark. If you`re looking at say vinyl windows, yeah you`re getting gouged. Price the same units a Lowes or HD. Most of the time their lead times really suck, but for the most part their installation track records are acceptable and their guarantees are good.
- I wouldn't buy anything other than Andersen or Marvin.
- The price sounds too good to be realistic...for the installer. Get at least three estimates.
For reference, go to a building supply or big box home store and check the variety and prices of replacement windows. Generally, where windows are sold the retailer can refer you to installers and can even give you an approximate quote on the total cost.
Don't go for the least expensive window, as the expense of windows varies with the efficiency. You will pay more initially for a Pella or Anderson (examples, not necessarily recommendations), but with efficient windows you will realize power/fuel bill savings every month after installation. Be pound wise.
- Ok one detail you didnt mention was the window sizes...and number of each.......I for one can tell you I just installed 14 windows myself never having done this ever before. I purchased andersen wood finished windows double hung and double pane glass...size 36 x 54......cost me including the extra cost for screens(aprox $20 ea) about $280-$300 a window will all my materials....and they look and work fantastic....your windows may vary since smaller windows are less than $200 ea for these nice andersen ones....basically ALL installers rip homeowners off with Siding(which is soooo easy and cheap to do yourself) and widows(which also takes time but anyone can do if they want to give it a shot...I did 2 a day after i got into a routine, sealed them up nicely and insulated around them....and reapplied or added new molding where needed..
- Actually, that sounds about right on for a middle of the road window. Keep in mind all the work involved in replacing the window. About half that cost is probably labor.
If at all possible, find a friend who can do the work and spend the money you save on better windows.
If you don't know anybody who can do the work, get some more estimates. Get 5 or 6 people to bid the job. Throw out the cheapest and the most expensive right away. The cheapest will probably do shoddy work. The most expensive is probably trying to rip you off. Of the rest, pick the company that you like the best. Base this on the professionalism of the person you dealt with, word of mouth recommendations from other people, gut feeling, whatever...
- That is extremely high, shop around. You should be about half of his sale price, or maybe even less if your lucky.
