Should I choose vinyl or non-vinyl replacement windows? I need advice on whether to buy vinyl replacement windows for my home. I am finding mixed information on the Web. I know that vinyl windows can be very energy efficient, but I am concerned about dioxin and other toxins linked to vinyl. I just got an estimate today, and the non-vinyl windows (fiberglass) are nearly twice as expensive as the vinyl ones. Can you help me decide?
Need a good website to help in decoding vinyl replacement windows? We are replacing our windows with retrofit vinyl windows and are finding it very difficult to navigate between all the different models, manufacturers and efficiency numbers. Problem is that not as many people replace thier windows so not as much information on the longevity of the windows, except for from the salesman. Does it matter whether I get vinyl or wood replacement windows as far as resale value when I sell in 3 years? I like vinyl replacement windows versus wood replacement -tried of painting, staining, maintainence of wood. Is it necessary to have steel / metal framing in a replacement vinyl window? We're getting ready to replace our existing aluminum windows. Two different company's have told us that it is better to have a vinyl replacement window which has a steel framing in the structure so the vinyl can't buckle over time (i.e. Polybau and Window World). Is it really necessary to have this metal framing in the structure or does it depending on the size of the window? We have one very large window, 120" width x 60" height which I would find this to be very important in the long run. If it is recommended, can anyone recommend other brands with great NFRC ratings that have metal framing in the vinyl windows structure besides the two I have already listed? I am in Northern California, so please keep in mind available brands. Thanks much! Can you paint white vinyl replacement windows another color, and not have a problem with the paint peeling off I need to paint them brown to match my house, but that color cost 3 times the price of white ones. The ones I am replaceing are wood painted brown.

Vinyl Replacement Windows - Upgrade over wood windows? So I have WOOD double hung windows now. They are not the greatest for usabilty since they don't tilt for cleaning and there is a storm window you have to open as well. If I replace them with a higher end white vinyl replacement window, will people looking to buy my house look at it as an upgrade? Not sure if they will they think, "oh look, cheap white vinyl windows doesn't go with the house" or "oh look, bright clean looking windows must be brand new." Putting in a combarable wood window is not even financially possible. I should have added that my home was built in 1995...so I don't know if they already think the existing windows are fine. 100% virgin vinyl won't yellow. I'm looking at upper end vinyl windows which are half the cost of a comp. wood window. You have to spend $1000-$1200 per window for wood windows. I guess if you have a half million dollar home it makes sense. I did more research on the yellowing, and that is an old scare tatic that came up 15 years ago for small start-up vinyl window companies that are no longer in business. Companies like Gorell and Soft-Lite do not have those issues....there'd be lawsuits all over the place. If you see yellow on a vinyl window its called nicotine. I should have added that my storms are wood and the windows have a poor sill design so alot of the storms have rotted or molded up. I've tried to strip them and repaint but the mold comes back due to the moisture...no weep holes!

How do you make an adjustment on vinyl replacement windows........? I believe there is a way to adjust the vinyl replacement windows, but I have forgotten how I was told when we bought them a few years back. When I open the bottom window and push it up all the way, it wants to slide back down about 3 or 4 inches. Isn't there an adjustment on the sides, and can you walk me through how to do this? They were in the home when we purchaed it. I think they came from Home Depot, but unsure of brand name. Years ago when they came out with the double hung replacement windows, we had them installed in our first home. The installer showed me how to adjust them if the lower window ever wanted to slide down when you raised it. You tilted the bottom pane out and on the inside of the stationary part of the facing?, there was a metal piece and you could turn it to tighten. I cannot remember exactly how to do it and hoped someone could tell me what it takes to do it. Thanks anyway.

Replacement windows in block wall? I am replacing windows in my basement. The old ones are single pane old metal set in the mortar. I'm going to use diamond blade to cut the mortar to get the old windows out and then use pressure treated lumber to build a frame for vinyl replacement windows. Any other suggestions? When purchasing replacement windows and doors (in my case vinyl) does it pay to go expensive? The cost of high end replacement patio doors and windows is like 3-4 times as the ones you can by at Lowe's or Home Depot. If they last longer, wear better, they might be worth it, but I'm not a rich man, and if the differences are minimal, I don't want to shell out the big bucks. vinyl Replacement Windows for Home? I live in CT and am looking for replacing old windows. Any recommendations of dealers /manufacturers based on quality & pricing will be helpful. Did got some information on Simonton through Home depot and Kengsington from one of the dealers. There is lot of price difference simonton 15K and kengsington 31K. This is for 16 Double Hung Windows , 2 Picture Casement combinations and one huge 7' X 13' window HD Simonton 6500 series. The cost above includes labor and material.
