Window Replacements Knowledge Base
Window replacements? I'm considering replacing our bedroom windows since they are very drafty(we live in the midwest). Is it ok to have this done during the winter months or should I wait until warmer weather?
Any recommendations on large window replacements? I have a 10 ft wide picture window that needs some serious replacement. The way it is set up now is a 6ft window that doesn't open in the middle with a 2ft window on either side which do. Don't know if this is standard, the thing is huge. Just wondering what to expect (price wise) and what companies you would or would NOT recommend.
Window Replacement Experiences in New Jersey? Does anyone have any positve experiences with a window replacement company and prices that were paid. I had window wizards come out today with a quote of 450 a window for basic vinyl.
2000 Dodge Dakota Rear Window Replacement? I just ordered a replacement window for my 2000 dodge dakota regular cab and am planning on installing it myself. I have some knowledge of how to install windshields, but have never attempted to replace a rear window. Anyone have any experience with this particular truck, and if so, is there anything I need to know? Are there screws holding it in or anything of that nature? I'd like to have a little prior knowledge to minimize the surprises.
where do i get a replacement window for a single layer glass sliding window? all the sliding glass windows at Home Depot are double layer glass now. I lost one of my sliding window panels from my kitchen window. i am looking for a replacement. i dont want to replace the whole window, i just want the missing sliding panel to put into the existing window. its not just the glass. i want the missing panel, with the frame. there are 2 sliding panels on each side, and a fixed panel in the middle. One of the panels is missing. not just the glass is missing or broken.
How do I measure for a window replacement that was installed from the outside? My windows were installed from the outside and the siding was installed over it. I have already replaced one window, but my measurements were wrong making the window too small. I had to frame out the window to make it fit. Of course, after the window was in, I installed trim around the outside window to hide where I cut the siding away. It looks nice, but I don't want to frame all the other windows. All the instructions on the Internet are for windows with sashes or windows installed from the inside. Thanks for any guidance anyone might provide! Do I measure flange to flange or just measure what I see from the outside? Am I making this too complicated? It took so much longer with the first window because I had to frame out the window as the ordered window was too small.
How do I measure for a replacement window? I have an old window in the back hall, how do I measure for a replacement? I dont want to remove the old window to the rough opening, I want a replacement that slides into the opening.
Is it necessary to have steel / metal framing in a replacement vinyl window? We're getting ready to replace our existing aluminum windows. Two different company's have told us that it is better to have a vinyl replacement window which has a steel framing in the structure so the vinyl can't buckle over time (i.e. Polybau and Window World). Is it really necessary to have this metal framing in the structure or does it depending on the size of the window? We have one very large window, 120" width x 60" height which I would find this to be very important in the long run. If it is recommended, can anyone recommend other brands with great NFRC ratings that have metal framing in the vinyl windows structure besides the two I have already listed? I am in Northern California, so please keep in mind available brands. Thanks much! One thing I failed to mention, I am not referring to the spacer between the panes of glass, but the actual vinyl framing. Thanks again. Can someone tell me why it isn't important if you say no?
What is the best way to measure for a replacement window? I'm about to order some replacement vinyl windows and am not sure where to measure to assure the most accurate measurements. I have a brick house and was told to measure from brick to brick around the window on the outside of the house. Is this the best way? I am also aware that many times, when an order is placed, the windows will come slightly smaller. Please respond only if you have successfully measured and replaced a window. Thanks. I'm ordering my windows from Home Depot, and not from one of their sales reps (those are twice as much money). They don't come out and do measurements. They only advise on how to measure, a method I've tried in the past and was not happy with my too-small window--What good is an insulated window when there is all kinds of air passing all around it? Yeah, we caulked...a lot, but there is so much white showing around the border of the window I think it looks funny from the outside up against my brick. I just don't want my windows to come too small. A little small to make it plumb and play it safe is no big deal though. But an inch? I hired a handyman to install my windows. He just measured from drywall to drywall on the inside of the house--not very accurate, but adequate for estimates on windows . Another handyman told me to measure from brick to brick on the outside. Is that the opening? I would just tear out a window to measure the opening, but it's too cold to have an open window.
what is better for window replacement -awning or casements? We have a big living room window we have to replace and my wife wants casements for air flow. I want awnings because it repels water if it rains and if the wind gust when they are open, it wont bother them. Can anyone give me their experiences with both?
How can I make a replacment window in a brick frame look nice? I have a brick house and am replacing the windows. I installed the windows and they are a pretty good fit, but as a side effect of a replacement window, I've got gaps on the sides. I caulked the gaps, but I would like to know if I can put some kind of a trim around the frame hiding the caulked gaps. I've googled around and have come across "brick molding", but I can't really find any pictures to know if this is what I need. Does anybody have any suggestions what I should do. How do you replace a basement window? I want to replace a metal framed basement window that is through the concrete foundation with a vinyl replacement window. Removing the metal frame seems easier said than done. Is the metal frame suposed to be removed? If so, how?
Where can I get a replacement window part? My apartment has those windows where the bottom is removable so you can clean both sides and one night during a storm it fell inward and cracked! I'm guessing the last person to use it didn't put it in right. It happened the first week after I moved in and after I had turned in my list of things to be fixed. Where can I get just a bottom for my window so I'm not stuck paying a huge fine when I move out?
What is the best replacement window material? I just bought a home built in 1917. It needs new windows. It currently has single pane wood windows. What, in your opinion, is the best material to buy replacement windows. Vinyl, wood, or aluminum? Why do you think it is the best? Cost is a consideration also.
Window Replacement Process and Terminology? I'm working on a short story and I was hoping some experts can clarify the process of window replacement. In the story, the main character will be watching workers on a lift carry a sheet of reflective glass for an apartment window. First off, is there a technical name for those lifts they ride to install a window from the exterior? Secondly, how do they fix glass into the frame from the outside? Do the workers themselves have a specific title? Any additional details would be appreciated. Thank you so much.
Where can i find a rear window replacement for my 1989 BMW 750il? http://www.murphyauctions.net/images/kenmore08jul/1027.jpg You can't see the window but its on the passenger side in the back. Not looking for window motors or anything like that, just the actual window. I've been googling it for an hour now and all i can seem to find is window motors and what not, not the actual window. Thanks. I need to replace the glass
Question about a replacement window? We're trying to replace the slider window in the bedroom. We went to home depot to buy a replacement one, and they didn't have the exact size, so we got one slightly smaller. Will this work? What modifications will be needed to make this work?? How can you remove smoke film from a car window? I have tried everything!!? This film is kind of waxy looking and glass cleaners don't remove it. I called a window replacement center and the only alternative I was offered was to have it replaced. I have compared my window to others and mine looks terrible. It's especially worse at night, causes a bad glare. The film appears to be on the interior glass.
Do you need a contractors license to start a window company in California? Ok so, my family owns window companies in Illinois. Window replacement, siding, roofs, doors, etc. Basically they have relationships with factories that they buy their products from and have 2 teams of installers who actuallly install the products. I live in southern california and wanted to open a division of the family business here. I have been doing a little research and I am finding that most window company owners have contractors license. Is this required? Is there a way around it if my installers are licensed? Anyone with knowledge in this area would be appreciated thanks! Just to clarify my question: Does the retail portion of sales need a contractors license? OBVIOUSLY the actual installers doing the work would be licensed.

is there tax credits for home window replacement? The windows in our home (8 years old) are rotting and are very drafty in the winter. Our heating bills last winter averaged $1,400 month. Do you know if there is grant money or tax credits for replacing home windows to save on energy costs?
Which replacement window style looks best for my house? I am having the windows in my home replaced. The options I have are all-vinyl (white, beige or brown) or aluminum on the outside, with a choice of paint-grade or stain-grade wood inside. The windows I am replacing are all wood-frame. I'd pretty much settled on the white vinly (easy to coordinate and less expensive) except that much of my interior decor, including the trim around the windows on the main level is stained OAK. I'm wondering if that would look cheesy - the white vinyl window next to the stained oak interior trim. Thoughts? Has anyone tried this or seen this at all? Thanks in advance!

How do i remove glass from window for replacement? I have what I think is aluminum windows. looking at the window it has 2 sections, the top half and bottom half, bottom half being the part you slide to open. each half has six sections, pieces of glass divided by strips. I need to replace one piece and cannot figure how to remove the damaged one. I have gone over all the edges with a "blade" to remove any seal but it still doesn't budge. There are pieces on the exterior side that appear to "frame" the glass and possibly hold it in place, it doesn't look like any form of putty, it looks like plastic. I need to find out what that is and If i need to remove it and should i be able to reuse it.
How to remove broken rear hatch window of van and replace with new glass? Does anyone know how to remove the rear window of a 95 Dodge Grand Caravan? My back window imploded one day while parked! The glass was bulging outward as if it broke from the inside outward. I have a replacement window but do not know how to get off the existing window as a whole to reinstall the new window. Any "do it yourself" advice please.
Adding a window - replacement vs new? We're adding a window in a master bedroom (remodel) Our contractor recommended going with a replacement window versus new. Is this since they just cut through our existing cedar siding, and install it in on the inside of the window versus the exterior and re-side over it. Although then wouldnt they have to build the jam inside the walls? Have a call out to the contractor, but curious for some advice on here.
