Installing Replacement Windows Knowledge Base
How difficult is it to install replacement windows doing it yourself? I have no experience installing replacement windows and will be replacing 23 windows on a house we just purchased. Looking for some advice on (1) what windows to buy, and (2) how difficult it is to remove and install. I am fairly handy, remodeled a bathroom tearing everything down to the studs, installed a new door frame, laid new laminate flooring. I am not afraid to try this on my own, want to know if I would be getting in over my head.
Have you recently purchased replacement windows for your house? Looking for anyone who's had replacement windows installed in the last 2-3 years or so. It's not the cost I'm concerned with, though I'd love to hear your comments. I'm more interested in what you had and what you chose as the replacement, what kinds of things you considered while shopping, and now that you have your new windows, do you have any "I wish..." items - things you'd do differently? Thanks!
Can you help with with installing a replacement aluminum window with nailing fins? I took out the trim and removed the old wooden window. The new window is the same size but I can't get it inside the frame because of the nailing fins. I've tried looking at the website and other website but it's really confusing. I can't understand the pictures at all. Am I suppose to fold over the bottom nailing fin and fold the sides over and nail it to the frame or cut into the window frame to get the window in there? I didn't think it would be this confusing..please help? Should I just cut off the nailing fin? Can't return it, already painted the darn thing... :-/
How do I measure for a window replacement that was installed from the outside? My windows were installed from the outside and the siding was installed over it. I have already replaced one window, but my measurements were wrong making the window too small. I had to frame out the window to make it fit. Of course, after the window was in, I installed trim around the outside window to hide where I cut the siding away. It looks nice, but I don't want to frame all the other windows. All the instructions on the Internet are for windows with sashes or windows installed from the inside. Thanks for any guidance anyone might provide! Do I measure flange to flange or just measure what I see from the outside? Am I making this too complicated? It took so much longer with the first window because I had to frame out the window as the ordered window was too small.
What are the best type of replacement windows? I'm replacing four double hung windows. Vinyl, direct from a local manufacturer will cost < $1500 installed. A well known international company will charge $5000 for the same windows but with metal clad exterior and pine interiors. The less expensive have a grill between the glass panes, the pricier ones have a removable wooden grill that looks far better and won't compromise the look of the front of the house. Both are virtually maintenance free. Any advice? Thanks.
What causes condensation on windows? Each morning, the interior side (as in the glass facing the room) of some of our windows is covered with thick condensation. Our house was built in the 1950's, but replacement windows were installed about 10 years ago. The outside temperature is about 55, and the inside temperature is about 75 when this happens. What causes this? What can I do to fix it? Thanks. I should add that the windows are double-pane, and in case it wasn't clear in my description, the condensation is NOT between the panes. It is on the room-side of the window such that I can wipe it off. Thanks.
Replacement windows seem colder than the old ones they replaced. How should I proceed with installer? Had new double sash vinyl Vista windows installed to replace drafty old ones. Look great. But, house seems even colder than before. Cold air seems to be coming from sash itself. I plan to shoot it with a thermal camera and see where the cold is coming from. My question is how do I proceed with installer after I find what the problem is and what, if any, legal recourse do I have in case the installer tries to push the problem back on me.
Good double hung sash replacement kits for early windows? My house was built in 1928 and has the original wood double hung, single lite, windows in front. The rear windows are not visible from the street and had the sashes removed and replaced with a kind of insert made from aluminum. Probably done in the 70s or 80s and the orignal window frames these are sitting in still look good. We've been restoring the front original windows and wanted something to match in the back to replaced the aluminum inserts. I originally bought some Anderson Woodwright 400 series replacement window inserts for the rear windows. After installing the first one I instantly didn't like it because you could tell it was an insert. The wood to glass ratio was way off and drastically reduced the visible glass. I sold these to my neighbor who didn't mind that look. So now I'm considering a sash replacement kit like Jeld Wen's Zap Pack sash kits. I like how narrow the jam liners are. I think this might give me a real close to original look so they will match my front windows inside and out. But I haven't seen these in person yet and am still trying to locate a dealer nearby. Who else makes sash kits like these? I'm interested in a good fit and finish with a wood interior and clad exterior. And I'm more interested in the proper look for the house than an airtight fit. I've seen some complaints about this type of kit not being as air tight as some would expect. My house is 80 years old and I'm realistic about what to expect in regards to being air tight. I'm more interested in the benefits of the double pain Low E glass. Any thoughts on this type of kit and who makes them? I see Marvin has a similar kit but the jam liners look much thicker. Thanks

2000 Dodge Dakota Rear Window Replacement? I just ordered a replacement window for my 2000 dodge dakota regular cab and am planning on installing it myself. I have some knowledge of how to install windshields, but have never attempted to replace a rear window. Anyone have any experience with this particular truck, and if so, is there anything I need to know? Are there screws holding it in or anything of that nature? I'd like to have a little prior knowledge to minimize the surprises.
Insulating around replacement windows? What are some opinions of the best way to insulate around the replacement windows when you install them. I am currently using batt insulations and pushing it in all around the window with a putty knife, since I have tons of extra batts to use. What has anyone else had success with? Is that non-expanding foam any good? At $5 a can its quite pricey. Just curious of different or most successfull options out there.
Windows XP gave me an error installing Macromedia Flash Player? I got an error installing Macromedia Flash Player 6 on my computer. I downloaded it from a file sharing group. Windows said, "A file replacement was attempted on the protected system file swflash.ocx. To maintain system stability, the file has been restored to the correct Microsoft version. If problems occur with your application, please contact the application vendor for support." I couldn’t install Flash Player 6 because of this. What’s going on here?
DIY Replacement windows? My husband and I bought an older house (1930?) and it's got the most awful windows you can imagine. When we bought it, the basement bedroom windows were painted and nailed shut and covered with plastic. For fire safety, we had someone "fix" the windows, but essentially what he did was sand them down to the point where you can see daylight around the edges. The work was free to us (gift from our realtor) so I couldn't do much about it. Anyway, I can't afford to have professionals come in and install all new windows in the house. I'd like to, before winter, at least get the basement bedroom windows replaced so my kids, my husband and I don't freeze to death. Where can I find REALLY good, visual, step-by-step information (book form or online would be great) to buying windows from Home Depot or Lowes and installing them myself? Thanks! RE: expanding foam - I don't want the windows to be inoperable.
How can I reinstall Windows XP w/o CD after replacement of a HDD? Basically, the HDD on my parents computer crashed and with it, the reinstall capabilities of the second partition. So, I bought a new HDD and installed my copy of windows xp onto it and using the activation key on the side of my parents computer. No such luck in activating. The computer is well passed its warranty so getting Dells help is out of the question. I'd rather not spend $150 that I dont have to replace windows when I have a perfectly good activation key right here. Is there a way to solve my problem without spending gobs of money? Thanks!
To caulk or not to caulk new vinyl windows? We just got new vinyl replacement windows installed. Our contractor, who has done tons of great work for us over the years, told us not to caulk these windows between the window and the extension jam. Is this correct? All of our older windows are caulked, but he said no, let the window expand and contract at will. Opinions?
Bought replacement windows that are too small; How can I make them fit? We are poor LOL bought some discounted replacement windows at a bargain price $49 each (normally $835.00 each installed);double hung, Low E, Argon filled, Vinyl Simontron Windows. These windows are about 4-5 inches smaller than my current widows outlined by brick. How do you make them fit?
Contract question - My replacement windows were installed 7 months late.? I had a contract with a home improvement company to put replacement windows in my house. The contract was dated June 1st 2007 and said they would deliver and install the windows within 2-4 weeks. They just showed up last week (7 1/2 months late) and installed the.... Do I still have to pay them? Some are still messed up and I've spent tons of time trying to get things straightened out with them. Can they sue me or put a lien on my house considering that they broke the contract? They broke the contract by committing to start the job AND be finished within 2-4 weeks and then gave one excuse after another and didn't show up again for almost 8 months. They also provided a bunch of broken materials and I have one window with a broken frame, and 2 where the glass is broken. They have replaced one of the broken glasses and not fixed the other stuff. I have about 60-70 hours of my own time invested in dealing with them by now. The company also had advertised "satisfaction guaranteed or your money back"... I don't think they satisfied the contract which is why I am wondering if I have to pay them...
Replacement windows...is this worth it? This May we are having replacement windows installed in our home. The company that's doing our 10 double-hung windows gave us a quote today on replacing our large front floor-to-ceiling bay window. (This window, by the way, is original - it was built with the house in the '40's.) $1,700 for 2 panes of tempered glass, new muttons and framework, and aluminum capping on the outside. My question pertains to something another company we received a quote from told us: that we'd need to have the entire thing ripped out and re-installed (i.e. - new construction). Their estimate, of course, was more than double the one we got today. What's the best way to go? Can this type of window be replaced, or do we really need to save up for an entirely new structure? We don't plan on living in this house for the next 30 years, but I would like for the job to be done right. Thanks.
Has any one ever done business with a company called "Windows USA" who instals and sells Alaskan? Vinyl Windows. A man came to our house offering a check for $100 just to allow him to demonstrate the product. The sales man showed us the product and after estimating the cost of the project at $12,658 we decided we did not want it. So eventfully the estimate got down to $8,610 but we still didn't want to pay that much for replacement windows. Eventfully the sales man got on the phone with the company management the price was again reduced to $5195. For this we felt like we had a deal and with the sales man in our house for four hours we wanted him to leave. We knew replacement windows were a way to raise the equity in our home which seems like a good idea but now that we have signed a contract and had time to think things over, we are suspicious. There are numerous typos in the paper work and we can not seem to find the company on the internet at all which seems strange. I need to know if any one has done business with this company and if they were satisfied with the results.
When replacing windows do the cills go in first or after the window? I am assuming the windows are replacement windows because they are the slim variety. But just in case if they are new windows then when would the cill be installed? This is on a porch at my daughter's house. The only windows out there were storm windows so hence the reason for new ones. Thanks in advance :)
What goes between window and 2x4 frame? Installing window, what is placed between the window edge and the 2x4 edge to make it water tight, caulk wont do it's too big an opening. What seals the (exterior) side of the window from water leaks. this is a flush mount window into stucco house. IOW there is no window sill on exterior side. I am installing now and am concerned on how to handle the gap around the edge of new replacement window.
How can I make a replacment window in a brick frame look nice? I have a brick house and am replacing the windows. I installed the windows and they are a pretty good fit, but as a side effect of a replacement window, I've got gaps on the sides. I caulked the gaps, but I would like to know if I can put some kind of a trim around the frame hiding the caulked gaps. I've googled around and have come across "brick molding", but I can't really find any pictures to know if this is what I need. Does anybody have any suggestions what I should do. I'm wanting to use PVC. Thanks. I have a brick house and am replacing the windows. If you were buying a victorian home- would your prefer old or new windows? Also the previous owner replaced 4 of the old windows with vinyl replacement and 3 of them have cracked because they weren't installed correctly. The estimated cost to replace all the windows is around $17,000. Would it really be worth it? The current windows are in good shape, though they could use some minor repairs to chains and need a few stops to be replaced. Is it worth the time and effort to fix repair/remove the paint, or not worth the hassle and buy new vinyl windows. My other issue is the way the vinyl windows will look on the exterior since they can't be painted, and the victorian trim. Efficiency isn't a problem with them. My heating and electric bills are actually quite cheap compared to some people, and my home with the 42 windows that it has is actually warmer in the winter months than a friends home that is a row and has new windows.
Where do I buy a replacement glass for my Tahoe window? I have a 1999 Tahoe. My father-in-law decided to mow our grass the other day and his lawn mower flung a rock through the back glass of my Tahoe, shattering it completely. It is the passenger side behind the driver's seat. Where can I find a cheap replacement for it so that I don't have to turn it in to my insurance? And also, is this something that we can do or do I have to have it installed professionally? Thanks for your help.
How do I install a new hard drive on my IBM X40 Thinkpad (while preserving the pre-installed Windows XP)? I recently purchased a (1) 60GB replacement mini hard drive (Lenovo Part No. 73P3358 )and (2) additional RAM (1GB PC2700 CL2.5 NP DDR SDRAM SODIMM; Lenovo Part No. 31P9834) for my Thinkpad X40 (2371HU1). This hard drive will replace the 40GB hard drive that came with my Thinkpad. My Thinkpad had arrived with Windows XP pre-installed by IBM/Lenovo. As a result, I was never provided with a disk for the operating system. I would be grateful for help with instructions for installing my new hard drive and RAM, such that I would be able to continue to retain my Windows XP operating system. Simpler instructions would be particularly appreciated. I am still quite new at this. Thanks.
When was the last time you bought replacement windows.......? Last year I replaced all the windows in my house with that expensive double-pane energy efficient kind, and today, I got a call from the contractor who installed them. He was complaining that the work had been completed a whole year ago and I still hadn't paid for them. Hellloooo,...........just because I'm blonde doesn't mean that I am automatically stupid. So, I told him just what his fast talking sales guy had told me last year, that in ONE YEAR these windows would pay for themselves! Helllooooo? It's been a year, I told him! There was only silence at the other end of the line, so I finally just hung up. He never called back. I bet he felt like an idiot ~Peace~
How can I complain against window supplier? My contractor installed room windows and patio windows a year ago. The brand is superior windows. However,my handle of vinyle patio door was suddenly broken and asked about replacement. Initially, the window company asked me to contact my contractor who purchased windows and installed them. I contacted them but they said that I need to contact the window maker directly. After I explained this situation, the window company,Superior Window, said that they would send the handle for free and then I have been waiting for almost two months but no product. I have sent five follow emails to the company but they keep ignoring my emails without any reponse. Now I'd lile to send complaints to some consumer agencies. Do you know where I should send this complaints to? I spent almost $10,0000 for my windows and patio doors but this company (Superior Window) doesn't even care about customer's request. I even said that I am willing to pay for it. But they still don't care about my request.
Windows XP shell problems.? A few days ago I installed an entire shell replacement for my Windows XP installation. However the shell replacement was a little quirky, for example accessing a folder's properties by right clicking on in caused a send error report to come up in it's place. However, before installing the shell replacement I took some precautionary measures. First of all I made a system restore checkpoint and secondly I backed up all my critical data. I have uninstalled the shell replacement but the quirky behavior still persists. I have rolled back to the system restore checkpoint, but to no avail. I am thinking about repairing my Windows XP shell by using the 'repair existing installation' function in the Windows XP CD. Will doing so damage program settings such as uTorrent and Outlook?

Roman shades question? OK, new house we bought has replacement windows that look great. One problem the way they were installed I can not put the window treatments I like (roman shades and the bamboo shades with a valance built in) inside the window when installed. I have never seen these hung outside the window. Will they look ok like that or do I need to go with another type of window treatment?
Shoddy workmanship in window caulking - house not staying cool? There were replacement windows installed in the old portion of the house, and there is also new construction with the same problem. There are voids(1/8 inch plus) in the corners and some of the sides between the wall and the window inside of the house. The part where the wall does meet the window chips out easily, and the void looks pretty deep in there. Do I need to crack out whatever dried out stuff it is and recaulk? What is the likelyhood that they pulled the same stunt when they re-stuccoed the house on the outside? I'm willing to do all the work, what do I need to do to seal my house and make it cost-effective to heat and cool? Thanks!
