SF Bay Area double-pane window replacement? How much is it for a typical installation of new double-pane windows to replace the old drafty ones? I live in a 30 yo condo and there's around 7 big windows, 3 small bathroom windows, and of course the patio door. Like everyone I want to save on my utility bills. Although I plan on doing this in the off season so for now a warm blanket and wearing warm clothes inside the house will do (I set the heater to 65 degrees and it'd almost keep blowing the whole day). Would appreciate people sharing their experiences, the company they use and the cost :) BTW I suppose these window companies would be able to adhere to my condo rules regarding windows.

$150 charge for terrace door window replacement without being notified by AGent about charge? AGain. AGent charging $150 for terrace window replacement (cracked pane). No break ins occurred. Several rainstorms this year. Window cracked earlier this year, but i had no time to stay home to have the repair done. Had the Agent forewarned me about a $150, i would have not had the window replaced. There are no kids in the unit. When i submit my rebuttal for the charge, should i attach the weather reports showing rainstorms? What proof can the AGent provide that the cracked window was supposedly caused by the Tenant? Should i have reported the repair as soon as the rainstorm ended? Travel quite a bit. Found debris blown onto terrace after a rainstorm. Debris caused cracked terrace window.

Is it better to get a replacement window (with frame) or just replace the glass? I have a double pane window that is many years old and very cheap (came with the house, maybe 1/32" panes). I want to change the windows because the noise from outside and nearby train is very easy to hear. The two options I have are: full replacement of the window with new vinyl frames to a double pane window (1/8", 1/8"+laminate+1/32") or just replace the double pane with something better (1/8", 1/8"+laminate+1/32"). The price difference is that the second option is about 25% less than getting it with brand new frames. Also the first option is with LowE3 and a super-spacer. The second option uses LowE2 and aluminum spacer. I am concerned that getting the second option, with just new windows and using my existing frames and panes (which are in decent condition) will not be sealed properly as the complete replacement. Any recommendations?

Shorter Slide In Replacement Window? I have the need to replace an old, single-pane window with a new, shorter window. Is it possible to use a slide in replacement window, moving the old sill up to the proper height? Should I tear everything out and just install a new windows? Any thoughts, tips would be appreciated. My initial thought for a shorter replacement window is to remove the old sashes, carefully remove the old sill, frame in the new bottom of the windows with some 2x4's, fill in the new gap at the bottom of the window, install the slide in window, and alter the old sill to fit the new window. I should also note that I am going to have to replace the drywall in the interior.
replacement window options? I have a 40 yr old ranch house with single pane, double hung wood windows. The glazing on them is shot, they don't stay up by themselves, and in the winter they are very drafty, even with aluminum 3-track storm windows. Obviously it's time to replace the windows. But because of other exterior problems, I had my house sided last year with new vinyl siding (on top of the old wood siding). I don't want to do anything to damage the new siding. I do not like the look of vinyl windows inside my house, I want wood. On the outside vinyl or aluminum is fine. Also, I'd like to get rid of the ugly aluminum 3-track storms/screen attached to the outside of my windows, so I'll need screens as well as windows. I live the Chicago area, so I need windows that are appropriate for that climate. What are my options to replace these windows, without damaging the siding?

How can I make my house completely energy independent? I live in the northeast (Western New York), in a well-developed suburban village. My gas and electric bills exceed $550.00 monthly, and I’m sick of it. It’s a big house, but it’s well insulated, and has 30 brand new double-pane argon-filled replacement windows. The house is about 3,500 square feet, and has a baseboard hot water heating system. Strictly because of my absurd and ever-increasing utility bills, I want to create an energy independent home, if it’s possible. Wind, solar, hiring trolls to peddle bikes in the backyard… whatever the answer, I’d love to hear from knowledgeable people as to whether this is possible, and if so, how it can be achieved. Thank you in advance.

Cost to paint a Victorian in Central PA? Hi, Does anyone have any idea of what the going rate would be to paint a Victorian in Central PA? It is a large Queen Anne style, about 60 windows, no turret. About just over 1/2 the windows are original and are 12 panes over 1 large pane. The windows in the 1st floor are all vinyl replacements. 3 entry doors total. The porches do not need painting. It will need the old paint scraped off although I believe that should be very easy. The house is currently covered with asbestos/cement shingles and the original siding underneath probably hasn't been painted in at least 60 years. I pulled several of the asbestos shingles off and the paint on the original shingles underneath comes off with just minimal effort. I am not including the cost of removing the asbestos shingles with the painting (already have that worked out). Just the actual scraping/prep work and painting. Thanks in advance.
Window grills for old windows -? We recently moved into a house with old casement replacement windows. The windows have no window grills (what looks like it used to hold window panes in place). I don't know the brand of the window (anderson, pella, off brand etc) and was wondering if anyone knew of a place to purchase some that we could even just glue in - it looks so bad from the curb without them. Thanks!
What are the best type of replacement windows? I'm replacing four double hung windows. Vinyl, direct from a local manufacturer will cost < $1500 installed. A well known international company will charge $5000 for the same windows but with metal clad exterior and pine interiors. The less expensive have a grill between the glass panes, the pricier ones have a removable wooden grill that looks far better and won't compromise the look of the front of the house. Both are virtually maintenance free. Any advice? Thanks.
Replacement Windows for a 1919 California Craftsman House. . .? Hi! I just recently purchased my first house and I want to replace many of the cracked/ broken windows with new/ more energy efficient windows. They aren't any sort of specialty window as most of the craftsman bungalows (Long Beach, CA) I drive by have the exact same dimensioned three panel type windows. They have one big pane in between two small panes. As most of these were built with kits I would think a company would make "Craftsman Replacement windows", but can't seem to find any. I can perform all of the work myself, but was wondering if anyone knew of a window company that would make my exact window without going custom. I'm looking to simply pull the windows form a shelf and slip them in and think it should be possible. Any recommendations? Links would be great. . . thank you so much.

Repairing Glass double Glazed Vinyl Window? Can it be done? One exterior pane is cracked due to sloppy painter. Can it be replaced opr does it require a complete window replacement?
if a company glues in the glass pack on a window, how do you get it out without destroying the moldings, etc.. the glass is fogging and needs replacement, but by the time I get the old glass and molding out, I practically need a new window and they are very expensive - Anderson 3 pane, dual glazed.
Windows replacement problem with contractor? I lived in California. I replaced the windows of my house with new double-pane window last September. I made the purchased through HomeDepot who contracted out the installation to 3rd party contractor. My window installation overall went well. However, there are 3 windows having problem with trim poping up. I noticed the problem the date of the installation. The installer said he will put a note in the acceptance paper and talk to their office and get back to me. They never got back to me and stopped answering call. HomeDepot discontinued the installation relationship with this contractor later (nothing to do with my case). I took the photo of problems and went back to HomeDepot to ask the guy sold me the windows. I was passed to install department. A manager said he needs to order new trim first. Once it arrives, he will give me a call. So far, there is still no one calling me. When I called him, he won't give anything specific. Please advice what should I do to have my problem fixed.
Replacement vinyl? strips which are used in old aluminum windows to hold glass snap/seal (triangular shaped)? These are old aluminum windows with single pane glass held in and "caulked" using a gray colored vinyl/rubber type strip of material which is triangular shaped but has indented crevices so that the material snaps into place sealing the window pane. It is used instead of caulking. I don't know if it is a glazing strips. It is 5/16" by 3/8" by 1/2" and apparently could be cut into any length strips that you need. I have been unable to find it anywhere.
How much should I expect to pay for vinyl replacement windows? I have to replace 26 windows in a 66 year old house. These are old wood windows that have NEVER been replaced. I'm looking at a double pane, double hung, Shuco windows w/ a 25 year warranty. I recently got an estimate for $14,100 total (including windows, installation, removal of old windows, taxes, etc). In addition, they will replace my front door and install it at no additional cost. I'm in the DC area and while I have gotten other quotes from other vendors, I was wondering if this particular merchant was offering me a good deal.
Glass replacement for tenant? I have dual pane windows in my apartment. I came back home and the outside glass of one of the windows is broken. However, the glass is so thick that only the "outside" glass is broken. I didn't tell my landlord yet. Do I have to pay for the replacement? How much does it cost? I don't know how the window got broken. I came home one day and it was broken. It doesn't make my place colder though since the inside glass is so thick.

How do I replace an aluminum window sash? The window is an aluminum double pane energy star window. I shattered both panes of tempered glass in the top sash, so I need to replace the whole thing. Only the bottom sash moves. The glass guys were going to charge me like $300, but i saw I can order a replacement sash for like 50 at home depot. So should I do it myself? If so, how do I do it?

Also, these are single pane old window glass. Do they make replacement custom double paned windows or something similar? Thnx Tloc, they are panes that are to be replaced, not the whole windows.
What is usual lifespan of double pane windows? A couple of windows are now gathering condensation after 22 years. They're up high, so the labor cost in replacement involved will be high, since installation is a 3-person job. Would it be wise to replace them all at this time or is there any realistic chance that they might keep working for some time to come? Thanks!
How do I go about fixing broken windowpanes on vinyle windows? I was installing a new Milgard window and accidentally broke one of the panes. I need to pry off the plastic coverings, measure the window and order a replacement double pane at a glass supplier. Is this a do it yourself project?
Replacement Windows - Nothing fancy, just dependable.? I have 14 double hung windows that need to be replaced. All are twin (meaning 2 windows side by side). They are wood single pane. The sills need replacing too. When buying replacement windows, are the whole window and frame (and sill) replaced? I'm looking for vinyl replacements, low e, low solar gain, double pane. I had one estimate of $8200! Dang. That was a lot more than I expected. I've priced the ones at Home Depot and for my size he quoted me a price of $200 each (Not including installation). This whole window replacement thing is really confusing. Thanks for any and all help!

Cost to reglaze/restore windows? We have several single-hung windows with multiple panes (mostly six over six) - wood trim and sash in aluminum frame. The glazing is essentially toast- peeling and cracking and for the most part missing thanks to many years of inhabitants neglecting to use storms or repaint. Some of the reglazing I can probably do myself, but several windows I've not been able to remove and others are above ground level. Has anyone even the roughest idea what a reglazing project (possibly repainting, the odd pane replacement or even complete pane replacement, other a la carte items) cost range is these days? Might it still be cheaper to have a glazier remove, reglaze and remount these windows than to replace them with the basic energystar vinyl windows and have done with it? Eventually we'll be able to have a glazier out for an estimate, but it would be good to have a very rough idea before starting to figure out priorities on projects! Thanks.
Thermal cracked window??? The other day, I noticed that the glass in the lower sash of the window in our spare bedroom was cracked. The crack starts at the bottom and runs about half way up. We know that nothing hit into the window and it happened just within the last few days as we would have noticed it before. We moved into this home this past October. It has electric baseboard heat and all of the units are located under the windows. My wife was staying in the spare bedroom recently as she was sick and her coughing was keeping me up at night. She had the chills, so she kept the heat in that room quite high...like 75 degrees! My question is if it is possible that, on a cold night and with the heat on relatively high...that could cause a thermal crackin the window glass. These are replacement windows and have two panes of glass...inner and outer with the decerative grids sandwiched in between. The house is a stick built modular that was built in like 1982. The windows are vinyl and I don't know if they are original or replacements. I don't have the phone number of the prior owner, but I may be able to look him up to ask.
Do I need building permits to replace my windows? I live in a tract home made in the late 40's early 50's. all of the windows are single pane the wood framings are rotted and they are in need of replacement. Some of the windows are made from floor to ceiling in which case I might have to stucko the remainder of the outside walls when I replace the big ones with the regular sized windows. I am told by friends and some contractors that I don't need a permit to replace the windows since I am not doing any major renovations that effects the floor plan or square footage of my home. Is this true? By the wayI live in Orange County , California.
Suggestions on Good Windows for a house? My wife and I entertaining the idea of replacing all of the old 70's windows with a good qualtiy window. We spoke with HomeDepot who, for 14,000.00, would replace all our windows. The window they showed was impressive, however, I am not convinced I need to pay that much for a good qualtiy window replacement. We have 20 windows total, with a specific room having 4 by 10 single pane glass ( 4 total). These would break out to two or three windows in each bringing the total to twenty. Any thoughts on where I can find comparable quality but a reasonable price? Thank you, Adam Williams Deridder, La
Replacement windows...is this worth it? This May we are having replacement windows installed in our home. The company that's doing our 10 double-hung windows gave us a quote today on replacing our large front floor-to-ceiling bay window. (This window, by the way, is original - it was built with the house in the '40's.) $1,700 for 2 panes of tempered glass, new muttons and framework, and aluminum capping on the outside. My question pertains to something another company we received a quote from told us: that we'd need to have the entire thing ripped out and re-installed (i.e. - new construction). Their estimate, of course, was more than double the one we got today. What's the best way to go? Can this type of window be replaced, or do we really need to save up for an entirely new structure? We don't plan on living in this house for the next 30 years, but I would like for the job to be done right. Thanks.
